Tools

Below is a compiled list of tools that are recommended for use with your pixel art.

Drawing

    • An Amiga DPaint inspired WYSIWYG pixel program supporting many formats, including .PCX, which is used by many PC Engine development tools/coders. It was abandoned for a bit, but has been revived and is in active development for various platforms. Highly recommended.
    • High end professional image editing software. It does have some support for previewing animation and can save out images in indexed color mode, although files may need some post processing to fix the palette format.
    • Modern take on classic WYSIWYG paint programs like D-Paint. Supports indexed palettes very well and has a simple interface with sprite/tile centric features. Not free, but still worth buying.

Map Creation

    • A very modern, easy to use, flexible tilemap creation program with various simple export types and multi layered support.
    • The original de-facto standard for PC Engine development with HuC, as HuC had Mappy file support directly included. Not as flexible these days, but still functional
